Recreation: Tension Free Life-Free Essay

Introduction : Recreation means refreshment of body and mind. It denotes anything that pleasantly occupies one's time after work is done. 'Tension, on the other hand, implies a disturbed state of things as contradistinguished from peaceful conditions. Life has now become tremendously complicated. As a result, everybody has fallen a victim to tension. Tension may arise and abide in the mind of a man when he gets into the grip of mental strain and stress. This is a state of continuous anxiety which eats into his vitals and causes him many serious problems including high blood pressure and heart disease.

Causes of tension : Tension arises out of many circumstances. Life is not an easy affair nowadays. Wants have multiplied manifold both in extent and variety. The mere task of keeping alive exhausts one's resources to the utmost limit. Just in order to taste the difference between poverty and comfort one has to toil and moil ceaselessly day in and day out. In fact, the ever-growing_ needs keep man always in tension and compels him to add to-his hours of work to win a surplus over and above his subsistence income. He does not find any time to relieve the dreary delusion of cares and anxieties. In his national life also man has to suffer tension arising out of social, political, communal or religious nature. In the international world there are tension and cold war between nations which often lead to violence and war. Whatever may be the cause or nature or shape of tension, it is very dangerous.
Recreation : Performing our increasing duties one after another and living, as we do, under a corrosive impact of problems familial, social, political, national or international— we find that our life is an endless enigma of tension. But, as the poet says : "What is this life, if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare?" Thus we must get rid of tension, which is terribly harmful to us, and for that purpose we must have recourse to recreational activities. A happy, man is one who knows and appreciates the value of recreation. We must follow the age-old prescription of the oriental philosophers and, reduce our wants and desires. We should spare a time to divert our minds towards recreational activities so that we may replace our tension with cheerfulness which is so vital to minister to our joy and delight as well as the health and strength of our mind.

Some recreational activities : Hobby is a kind of recreational activity through which our mind may find an escape from tension. Book-lovers can turn over the pages of some of their favorite books. Those who love flowers may take to gardening to grow and enjoy flowers of their own gardens. Some people may go to clubs or social gatherings and derive recreation from social interaction. While some would like to go to a gym or to play games, others may set about catching up an old hobby of angling or stamp-collecting. Some people may also go hunting, hiking, camping, picnicking or bird-watching. Walking or sight-seeing or going for long drives or visiting family and friends are also some of the common activities of recreation. But nowadays the most common activity for recreation is listening to radio and watching television.

Conclusion : The proverb goes : "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy." It underlines the importance of recreational activities in the life of every man. It is through these activities that we can get rid of worries and anxieties and ensure a tension free life. While we should involve ourselves more and more in recreational activities, we should bear in mind that, besides keeping one tension free, the object of recreation is to replenish the fund of strength and vigor which is used up by toil. It is a common sight that some of our youths while away their time in cheap enjoyment by way of engaging themselves in gambling and drinking. They do it in the name of recreation, but it is nothing, but a criminal way of killing' time. We should avoid all such activities by all means and keep the society free from this kind of evil deeds. We must not forget that we should try to live a tension-free life by resorting to adequate recreational activities of innocent nature.
