A Man Is Known By The Company He Keeps-Paragraph

The companions of a man indicate his character. As a social being a man needs people with whom he can mix and converse freely, exchanging thoughts and ideas, hopes and fears. But a person whose tastes and inclinations are different from ours cannot give us the delight which we expect from friends. So a man naturally seeks the society of those who are like himself in their taste and inclination. We can, therefore, very easily say of what sort a man is from the nature and character of his friends. Moreover, friends exert a great influence upon our character.
If we mix with the bad, we shall get their bad habits and gradually become bad ourselves. If, on the other hand, we mix with the good and the noble, it will ennoble us too. Our character can thus be judged from that of our companions. Therefore, we should be good and noble in life, we should carefully avoid evil company. When we may be taking to evil ways, a true companion will try his best to correct us. Thus it is well said that a man is known by the company he keeps.

Reading For Pleasure-Essay Or Composition

If one were asked to mention one thing the modern man is more blessed with than his remote ancestors, before the invention of printing, it is undoubtedly the pleasure he receives from reading books. In the modern age, books are plentiful and easily available, and those who wish, can read books of their choice with comparative ease.

The pleasures of reading are, indeed, many and varied. Those who are by nature intellectual, naturally derive a great joy from reading books dealing with serious problems. The challenge of ideas is a tonic that inspires and enlivens their whole mental attitude.

Reading also brings satisfaction to men of emotional temperament. They read poetry and drama and fiction with avidity. Works of imagination relieve the mind from the oppressive limitations of the real world. When they are fed up with the dull monotony of real life, reading gives them all the thrill and excitement of variety Reading, therefore, gives man the pleasures that are denied in real life. Yet the habit of browsing is not to be encouraged as it makes the reader impractical.
The ordinary man, enjoys reading, in a large measure, as a healthy form of recreation. After the day's labor, he feels happy to relax over a pleasant book. He turns over the pages, taking in what interests him. Such reading is, in a material sense, unprofitable, but it serves the purpose of refreshing the third mind. Books also may stimulate and uplift the moral sense of a man. Few pleasures can really be greater- than this. Indeed, 'a good book gives a tone to the mind and edifies it.

The companionship of books is of very great value. Human companionship may be sometimes unwanted and irritating. But books make no such demand on. One can take 'up a book or read it as one's mood demands. It is in itself Books of our choice are our never-failing companions.

The Reading Of Novels-Essay/Composition

There was a time when parents used to look with disapproval if they found their children reading novels. In those days, it used to be so difficult for a young reader to get hold of a novel of Bankimchandra or Rabindranath ! It had to be a clandestine reading ; when the minor boy or girl got hold of one such novel, he or she had to read it by stealth. People thought that the reading of novels had a corrupting influence on the minds of young people.

Of course, those days are gone. Eighty percent of books now read all over the world (except Russia) are novels and most of these crazy readers are bare adults. But there are certain evils which might be prompted by reading novels. Novels create thrilling emotional situations. Constant reading of such thrilling and fanciful situations keeps the mind in a state of unhealthy excitement. Romantic stories often tend to develop a romantic, and unreal attitude of life. Every one likes to be the hero or heroine of a romance. But the vast majority of the people are only common people, leading a hum-drum existence. Hence, when they face realities, they are found wanting. Another evil is that too much attention to novels often makes one neglect other studies and makes one light-minded. There are young men and women, who, if they get hold of a good novel, forget everything else and read absorbingly.
However, it is admitted that the study of novels has also it beneficial aspects. It widens our mental horizon. It opens our eyes to various types of men and women and teaches character study It forces us to pay attention to many unpleasant but hard realities of life. It brings us face to face with life and its problems.

A good novel is a recreation of life, as its running commentary Besides overwhelmingly romantic novels, there are the social and Political novels, like the novels of Saratchandra. They help our social consciousness.

The historical novel of Scott and Dumas, of Bankimchandra and Ramesh Chandra Dutta, give us insight into life as it was in the past and make the bygone life before our eyes with all its color and pomp. Others like science fictions may help us take a peep into the future about things to come, with reformation, as Aldous Huxley had tried to do in his 'Brave New World'.

Novels are sometimes known to have exercised far-reaching influence on human history. Charles Dickens revealed to his readers the evils underlying the educational and industrial institutions of his age. They study' of his novels led to various social reforms. Mrs. Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin showed in lurid colors the horrors of slavery and strengthened the movement for its abolition. Bankim chandra's Anandamah' had a notable influence on the growth of fighting nationalism in our country and inspired the revolutionaries of Bengal. Similarly Gorkey's Mother, Victor Hugo's Les Miserabies sparked off revolution and sounded the alarm bell against the old order. Novels have become a valuable medium of instruction and propaganda.

Novels are works of art. They create life on the plane of imagination. They help us to see life as it is and as it should be. But like a true work of art, a good novel gives a vision of the scope of life. The characters as well as the forces, the situations and their emotional effects are presented true to life. It is in the novel, more than other forms (genres) of literature, that 'the age finds itself most'. That is also the reason why most creative minds in literature in this century have been drawn to this genre.

Modesty-Paragraph

King Solomon said, 'Pride wrecks havoc on man, but modesty gives him the crown of honor.' Modesty is the successful consequence of man's knowledge. Modesty is the expression of gentleness. friendliness, and lawful attitude in man's conduct and behavior. It is one of the most important and rarest qualities of human life. It is, virtually, the behavioral social outcome of a wise and satisfied mind. It ensures the balanced and beautiful growth of man's mind, and spreads it socially in a balanced way.
Nothing can substitute the appeal of modesty to his social and mental perfection. To build up a habitual modesty, the role of practice and self-will is stronger than that of knowledge. And as far as the stages of life are concerned. childhood has no alternative in ensuring the proper building up of modesty in man's mind. If modesty is taught to a child from its very childhood both by oral teaching and examples, then optimum results can be achieved.
